A cybersecurity company has issued a warning about a new scam targeting users of the popular cryptocurrency wallet- MetaMask.
Luis Lubeck- Halborn Technical Expert has posted a warning about this scam. Scammers used emails to target MetaMask users and trick them into providing wallet passwords.
The company analyzed scam emails that they received at the end of July to warn users about the new scam. Halborn noted that at first glance, the email received looks like a validation email with a MetaMask header and logo, along with messages indicating that users are compliant with KYC regulations and how their wallets are verified.
However, Halborn also notes that there are some red flags to identify scams. Spelling errors and fake sender email addresses are two of the most obvious. Furthermore, a spoofed domain called metamaks.auction was used to send phishing emails.
This scam uses emails to lure victims into revealing more personal data or clicking on links to malicious websites and trying to steal cryptocurrency.
These emails often include malicious links associated with a fake website, and always prompt users to enter security keyphrases, which is really dangerous.
Halborn, a company founded in 2019 that specializes in providing blockchain and cybersecurity services.
In June, Halborn researchers discovered a case where a user’s private key could be found on disk in a compromised computer. MetaMask patched extensions 10.11.3 after discovering this issue.
However, there are no new post about scam warnings on MetaMask’s Twitter as of press time.
Last week, users in Celsius were warned of a scam following a customer email leak by an employee of a third-party vendor.
At the end of July, security researchers warned that a new type of malware called Luca Stealer appeared. Hackers stole information written in the Rust programming language and targeted Web3 infrastructure such as cryptocurrency wallets. Similar malware called Mars Stealer was discovered targeting the MetaMask wallet in February.
